The U.S. House Education and Workforce Committee held a hearing on July 14, 2026, titled "Training Activists, Not Physicians: The Impact of DEI on Medical Schools," where Chairman Tim Walberg (R-MI) argued that DEI initiatives foster antisemitism and prioritize ideology over medical competence. In his opening statement, Walberg cited investigations into UCLA Medical School and UCSF School of Medicine, alleging they engaged in race-based admissions and required curricula focused on "settler colonialist, anti-oppression nonsense" rather than medical science. During the session, Rep. Mary Miller questioned Dr. Sam Hawgood, Chancellor of the University of California San Francisco, and Dr. Steve Dubinett, dean of the UCLA medical school, about their institutions' teachings on gender and biology. When asked if a "non-biological woman" has ever had a baby, Dr. Hawgood responded that a "transgender person can," stating the terminology is part of a curriculum to help students face patient diversity. Rep. Miller criticized the witnesses for failing to affirm basic biological facts, asserting that medical schools abandoning scientific truth should lose accreditation.
